Get to know our team of friendly and passionate experts
Our owner, Julia Mewes, was driven by her life-long love of animals to pursue a career in veterinary healthcare and open her own pet-centred practice.
She’s since built a team of highly-skilled staff, all of whom share her passion. Rest assured that when you bring your pets to us, they’ll receive exceptional care.
Meet the team
Practice Director & Veterinary Surgeon
VetMB, MA, CertVR, OVS, GPCert(SAM), MRCVS
Julia qualified from Cambridge University in 1989 and has practised her entire career in Mid Sussex. In 1996, her experience motivated her to open a clinic that offered longer appointments and personal attention, to ensure every pet she saw could receive comprehensive healthcare.
Julia has a Certificate in Veterinary Radiology and particularly enjoys diagnostic work and soft tissue surgery. In October 2011, she was awarded The General Practitioner Certificate in Small Animal Medicine (a higher level of qualification for veterinary surgeons in General Practice).
Julia’s passion for animals has inspired her to write two books, Caring for Dogs with Mobility Issues and Caring for your Older Cat. Available in hard copy or PDF form, both are designed to help pet owners better care for their beloved animals.
You’ll also spot her name and work appearing in local newspapers – check out her weekly column in The Mid Sussex Times and monthly column in the Bolnore News.
Med.Vet, OVS, IVAS Cert, MRCVS
Angie qualified to become a Veterinary Surgeon in Germany in 1988 and has been working in small animal practices in the UK ever since. She joined the clinic in its early days, in 1999, and is one of our longest standing team members.
Angie’s interest in acupuncture led her to undertake the Western Acupuncture Introduction Course in 2008. She then started studying towards her International Veterinary Acupuncture Certificate, which she completed in November 2013. This means she is now one of very few vets in the UK who is a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist, practicing both Chinese and Western acupuncture.
BVSc, GPCert(FelP), OVS, MRCVS
Jean joined The Mewes Vets in 2007. She holds a General Practice Certificate in Feline Practice which is a higher level of qualification acquired after becoming an MRCVS. Although she loves all animals, she’s definitely a ‘cat person’. Feline medicine and soft tissue surgery are her areas of particular interest.
Jean is passionate about foreign travel and takes every opportunity to explore new places. She is also an avid gardener and spends lots of her free time pottering about in her garden, with her four cats Flora, Harley, Bentley and Linus.

Both practices were sold a few years ago, and she is now enjoying working part time for us, whilst also running a luxury cat hotel and looking after the myriad of animals which share her home.
