 Julia and Woody Quelch

Julia Mewes: Practice Principal and Veterinary Surgeon
Qualifications: VetMB, MA, CertVR, LVI, GPCert(SAM), MRCVS

Areas of Interest:Julia qualified from Cambridge University in 1989 and has practiced her entire career in Mid Sussex. In 1996, she conceived the idea for a clinic that offered longer appointments and personal attention, to ensure that no aspect of health is missed in the animals we see.

Julia has a Certificate in Veterinary Radiology and particularly enjoys diagnostic work and soft tissue surgery. In October 2011 she was awarded The General Practitioner Certificate in Small Animal Medicine. This represents a higher level of qualification for veterinary surgeons in General Practice.

As well as spending her days working tirelessly at our surgery, Julia also takes on a number of practice owner responsibilities such as staff management, training, and business issues.

When Julia is not at work her main hobby for many years was voluntary radio broadcasting with Mid-Downs Radio for the patients at the Princess Royal Hospital. More recently she has been learning modern Ceroc and Adrenalin Jive dance moves.

At home Julia enjoys spending time looking after her son John, and her dog Jasmine.

Angie Gill: Veterinary Surgeon
Qualifications: Med.Vet, LVI, IVAS Cert, MRCVS

Areas of Interest:Angie qualified to become a Veterinary Surgeon in Germany in 1988. She has been working in the UK in small animal practice ever since.

Despite enjoying the variety of different cases we see at the practice, Angie started her interest in acupuncture when taking the Western Acupuncture Introduction Course in 2008. In 2012 Angie started studying towards her InternationalVeterinary Acupuncture Certifcate which she completed in November 2013 and is now one of very few vets in the UK who is a  Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist, practicing both Chinese and Western acupuncture.

Angie also takes a keen interest in our geriatric patients who often benefit from acupuncture.

Angie is married and has a grown up daughter; she also has a lurcher cross called Josh, and a horse called Tia.

Outside of work Angie enjoys walking and riding in the countryside as well as interior design, psychology and gardening.


Jean Dyas: Veterinary Surgeon
Qualifications: BVSc, GPCert (FelP), LVI, MRCVS

Areas of Interest:Jean joined us at The Mewes in 2007. She has a General Practice Certificate in Feline Practice and although she loves all animals, she’s definitely a ‘cat person’. Feline medicine and soft tissue surgery are Jean’s areas of particular interest.

Jean is passionate about foreign travel and takes every opportunity to explore new places. She is also an avid gardener and spends a lot of her free time pottering about in her garden.

Jean recently married Dave, a former pilot in the Blue Eagles Helicopter display team, in a romantic ceremony in Sicily. They live in Surrey with their three cats Flora, Harley & Morris.


Mialee Blair: Veterinary Surgeon
Qualifications: BVetMed, MRCVS

Areas of Interest:Mialee  joined us in 2014.




Nikki Etherton: Practice Manager and Senior Nurse

Areas of Interest:Nikki has been with us at The Mewes since the day before the very first day we opened on the 10th June 1996. She deals with the general day to day running of the clinic, as well as providing her expertise in nursing appointments. Nikki has a keen interest in canine behaviour.

Outside of work Nikki enjoys spending time with her husband Phil, son Robert, horses Cooly and Humphrey, two cats Betsy and Marylin, and dog Dottie (pictured with Nikki).

Laura Smith: Head Veterinary Nurse
Qualifications: Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN), Pet Health Councillor, ND Animal Care, NC Practical Habitat Management, Clinical Coach

Areas of Interest:Laura joined us at The Mewes in 2006. She achieved her Veterinary Nurse Qualification in the same year and became Head Nurse in 2008. She has also trained as a pet health councillor and set up our weight clinics which are invaluable to lots of pet owners concerned about their animal’s waistlines.

Laura has a keen interest in both surgical and medical nursing including rabbit health, rehabilitation, and nutrition.

At home Laura has two cats called Worthington and Olive. She also has a bearded dragon called Jack and an African Rainbow Crab called Crabby.  

When she’s not busy at work Laura enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, horse riding and gardening in her allotment.

India Brooker: Veterinary Nurse
Qualifications: Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN), Cert II in Animal Studies, Veterinary Nutritional Advocate, Clinical Coach

Areas of Interest:India gained her Veterinary Nurse Qualification in Sydney Australia in 2009 before joining us at The Mewes in July 2012. She has a keen interest in the impact of obesity in animals and as a result has trained to become a Veterinary Nutritional Advocate. Her other occupational interests include Emergency and Critical Care Nursing.

In early 2012 India and her husband moved to the UK from Australia with their three pets; a rather odd looking Australian Cattle Dog cross called Niila, a monstrous three-legged rescue cat called Ty, and another rescue cat called Loti. They have settled well into our temperate climate with Niila showing a real love for snow and some skill on a sledge. She’s still a bit scared of snowmen though!

Denise Scutt: Veterinary Nurse 
Qualifications: Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN)

Areas of Interest: In July 2011 Denise joined The Mewes as a trainee Veterinary Nurse. She began her Veterinary Nursing training at The College of Animal Welfare in Huntingdon, Cambridge in September 2010, and came to us to complete her training. She became a full-time member of our team in September 2012 and achieved her Veterinary Nursing Qualification later that month.

At home, Denise has a Bengal cat called Bagheera who loves playing in water. She also has many pets back at her parent’s small holding in West Chiltington.

Outside of work Denise is part of a car racing team called BS racing, for the MSV track day trophy series. Her other interests include kickboxing, yoga and countryside walks.


Sarah Lucas: Veterinary Nurse
Qualifications: Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN), National Diploma in Animal Management

Areas of Interest: Sarah started working at The Mewes in 2004 as a work experience student; she’s been here ever since. In September 2009 she began her NVQ Veterinary Nursing course at Plumpton College, and in Summer 2013 she achieved her Veterinary Nurse Qualification. 

At work, Sarah’s special interests are inpatient care, medical nursing and learning about anaesthesia.

When she’s not at work, Sarah can be found at home with her cat Flossy who loves sleeping all day. She also enjoys keeping fit, swimming, socialising with friends and shopping.

Sarah Burns: Student Veterinary Nurse

Areas of Interest:Sarah has been working with us since June 2011 and began her Veterinary Nursing course at Plumpton College in September 2011. She has lots of experience working with animals; she has worked for a cat’s charity for a number of years, and trains gundogs as a hobby.

Outside of work Sarah has a rabbit called Marley, who lives with her parents for the moment. She also has a cat called Megan.

As well as training gundogs in her spare time, Sarah also enjoys socialising with friends and going to the cinema.

Lisa Clark: Student Veterinary Nurse

Areas of Interest:Lisa will be attending Plumpton College in September to begin her studies in veterinary nursing.

Lisa has volunteered at Paws and Claws rescue center for the past year where her passion for animals has grown. Lisa has three cats at home called Casper, Austin and Cookie and two guinea pigs called Sky and Coco.

When she gets the time Lisa enjoys horse riding and the cinema and following her favourite football team Tottenham Hotspur.

Shannon Desmond: Student Veterinary Nurse

Areas of Interest:Shannon is studying at Plumpton College as a foundation degree student and is currently in her 2nd year. She has a keen interest in anatomy and physiology and inpatient nursing care.

Outside of work Shannon bakes and decorates amazing tea cakes. She also enjoys playing netball in between working and her studies.
